Arsene Wenger told beIN SPORTS (13/02/21 at 2:40 pm) that the right call was made to allow Leicester City’s equalising goal against Liverpool on Saturday.
The former Premier League boss shared that the initial penalty awarded to Harvey Barnes was ‘a fraction outside’ of the area.
From then on, controversy ensued, as Liverpool felt that Jame Maddison’s resulting free-kick should have been ruled out for offside against Daniel Amartey.
Those in the VAR room got their rulers out, protractors and some crayons before judging that the goal should stand.
Wenger shared his thoughts on both incidents, with the latter leaving Liverpool fans annoyed.
“It was on the fringe (Barnes foul),” said Wenger. “If you consider the feet of the defender you could say penalty. I don’t think the defender made a huge movement with his feet. But it was a foul.
“At the end of the day, the start of the foul was a fraction outside. We don’t agree on many things (after being told it should have been a penalty).
On Leicester’s equaliser, Wenger first stated: “It looked to be offside. They have the three-dimensional judgment of the situation. Is it Mane who puts him onside?
But then after being told about Firmino’s right foot being onside, he then changed his mind: “Oh, yes, well then it’s not offside.”
Whilst Liverpool fans will look towards certain decisions which went against them on Saturday, they have bigger fish to fry.
One of them being who their centre-back partnership should be and how they are going to get Jordan Henderson back into the midfield.
