Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld wouldn’t get into any of the big teams in the Premier League anymore.

Alderweireld was once seen as one of the Premier League’s top centre-halves, making it into the PFA Team of the Year, but Ferdinand believes that he’s regressed in recent times.

Indeed, the former Manchester United star says that Alderweireld wouldn’t get into any of the other big teams in the Premier League.

“Without Kane and Son 100 per cent, they’re average. 100% Like Toby Alderweireld doesn’t get in any of the big teams, no chance. Three years ago he does, but not now he doesn’t. I mean he barely just gets into the first-team, so there’s no way. You have to agree that Spurs are an average team,” Ferdinand said.

It’s a harsh summery of a man who has been arguably one of the best defenders in the Premier League for the best part of the last decade, but Ferdinand may be right.

Alderweireld hasn’t been great this season, and it’s hard to argue he’s good enough to play for a team challenging at the very top of the division.

Of course, this argument depends on what you classify as a top side these days. Alderweireld would probably get into Arsenal’s XI, but can you really call them a top side at this point?

Regardless of which teams Alderweireld would or wouldn’t get into. The point still stands that the defender isn’t as good as he once was.
