Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, David Seaman has been discussing Southampton’s managerial situation and Jesse Marsch.

It has been reported that the south-coast club are in talks with Marsch over taking up the managerial vacancy at St Mary’s, and it’s fair to say that Seaman isn’t too excited by the idea of the American making an immediate return to the Premier League.

Seaman, as a Leeds fan, knows all about Marsch, and he says that Southampton would be much better going after Steven Gerrard rather than the ex-Leeds coach.

Go for Gerrard

Seaman spoke about Marsch and Gerrard.

“Do you know who we’re very heavily linked with? Jesse Marsch? For people who are only listening, David’s face then was an absolute picture,” Seaman’s co-host said.

“No, no, Steven Gerrard yes, not Marsch,” Seaman said.

Marsch not a bad option

Seaman says that Gerrard is a better option than Marsch, but we’re inclined to disagree in this situation.

Now, we’re not saying that Marsch is a better manager than Gerrard, or any other candidate for that matter, but he does suit Southampton.

Marsch was schooled by the Red Bull stable. His style is reflective of that, he plays high pressing, narrow, attacking football. Who else plays in that way? Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Hasenhuttl was a very successful manager for Southampton, and this squad was built in his vision.

Marsch could come in and pick up where Hasenhuttl left off, but as a new manager in the job, he could bring more vigour and enthusiasm than the Austian – who seemed burned out towards the end of his stint with the Saints.

Marsch really isn’t a bad option for Southampton at this point.
