‘Not many players have that quality’: 39-year-old absolutely wowed by Leeds loanee

Leeds United loanee Alfie McCalmont scored one of the best goals that he’s probably ever going to score on Tuesday night.

The 21-year-old left Leeds to join Oldham Athletic on a season-long loan last summer.

There’s already been a bit of buzz around McCalmont this early in his career, having already made his debut for Northern Ireland’s senior side.

And his stock rose in a big way earlier this week when he scored his side’s second goal in a 2-1 win over Exeter City.

When the ball dropped to McCalmont on the edge of the box on 55 minutes, the Leeds prospect executed a fine first-time volley which sailed into the top corner.

And even Exeter boss Matt Taylor was stunned by the goal, saying to ECFC: “The second goal is a hell of a finish from the edge of the box. So you can feel yourself a little bit unlucky because there are not many players who have got that quality.“

McCalmont is due back at Thorp Arch this summer but with Leeds being a Premier League side these days – and quite a good one, in fact – it remains to be seen if he’ll be able to break into Marcelo Bielsa’s senior squad.

But Bielsa is known for keeping an eye on what the youngsters are doing out on loan and no doubt he’ll be aware of McCalmont’s worldie this week.
