Sheffield Wednesday lost 1-0 against Preston on Saturday.
Sheffield Wednesday’s opening day defeat at Preston – and perhaps more so the performance that went with it – has provoked an understandably strong reaction on social media.
Be it on the pitch or off it – in particular the recruitment side of things – last season’s problems seem far from being resolved.
With a bloated squad – Wednesday have six recognised senior strikers, discounting Fernando Forestieri or George Hirst – and much of their budget already tied up, the Owls are facing a potentially difficult final three-and-a-half weeks of the summer transfer window.

A new centre-back remains top of Carlos Carvalhal’s list of priorities, with Johan Djourou’s on-and-off move to Hillsborough currently the latter. But after Saturday’s Deepdale showing, some Wednesday supporters have identified another position in urgent need of strengthening – the centre of their midfield.
In terms of numbers, the Owls are certainly not short their either. But are the likes of David Jones, Almen Abdi, and even Barry Bannan, in need of upgrading? Many people seem to think so.
Here’s what they have been saying.
