Tim Sherwood has hit out at Tottenham chairman, Daniel Levy, by claiming that it’s ‘not Jose Mourinho’s fault’ that he brought a ‘pragmatic’ style of play to the club, as he told Premier League Productions (19/04/21 at 7:15 pm).
On Monday, Tottenham sacked the trophy-laden coach six days before their League Cup final showdown with Manchester City.
Sherwood has had that dreaded call from Levy before and understands what it’s like to be in the Tottenham hot seat.
But he questioned why Mourinho needed to change his ways at Spurs given what he has won in the game.
“I was surprised that he went to Tottenham,” said Sherwood. “We know that Jose carries this style of play. It’s very pragmatic.
“Tottenham fans will not suffer that. He’s been very lucky that fans haven’t been in the stadium because they would have put extra pressure on him.
“The Bale’s needed to play. The players on the front foot needed to play. You would not have got away with it.
“He is one of the best managers we have seen in the game. High profile. He was available, so they brought him in. But he was still going to deliver all the same style of football.
“That’s not Jose Mourinho’s fault. That’s the fault of whoever brought him into the football club. And why should you change a man who has won so much? I think Daniel Levy backs his managers. But I don’t think he was prepared.”
Levy has made it pretty clear before that he wants Tottenham to win a trophy and here they were 90 minutes away from lifting one.
And given that Mourinho is an expert at navigating teams to trophies, it’s a surprise that Levy pulled the plug days before that Wembley showdown.
It will be interesting to see if a permanent figure is brought in before Sunday, or someone is placed in the Tottenham dugout, on a temporary basis, until the end of the campaign.
