Antonio Conte has told Monday’s press conference – as per Football London – that his contractual situation at Tottenham Hotspur is “not important” ahead of Wednesday night’s clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The 53-year-old remains out of contract at Tottenham at the end of the season. There is a clause in his contract that would see Spurs extend his deal by a further year, until the summer of 2024. It is something Spurs can activate.

However, Conte could be offered fresh terms in order to extend his stay in North London beyond 2024. It is believed that Conte is currently earning wages of £290,000 a week. The second highest in the league, behind Pep Guardiola.

Asked during Monday’s press conference about his contract, and whether he will sign a new deal, Conte said it is “not important”. He did stress, though, that he and the club will sit down to work out a solution that suits all involved.

“In this moment, not important. Most- important thing is to prepare for this period of games. We need to be focused for these three big games. I have to speak to the club about this situation and find the best solution for everybody.”

Conte: Contractual situation at Tottenham is not important

For Tottenham fans, it is of utmost importance. But it is testament to Conte that he is focusing on picking up as many points as possible over the next three games. They face Manchester United, Newcastle United and Sporting Lisbon.

Perhaps the time to discuss a new deal, is when the World Cup begins. The fixture schedule hits the back burner. Conte is left to work with the players that will not be competing at this summer’s tournament. He will have time.

What is Tottenham’s best move? Extend his deal with the clause they have, and face similar doubts this time next season about his future? Or hand Conte a new contract, and continue to back him? Spurs fans will want the latter.
