Rob Green has said on BBC Radio 5 Live (8:17pm, November 22, 2021) that Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey does not have the legs he once had.

The BBC pundit made the comments about Shelvey while analysing Newcastle’s 3-3 draw with Brentford at St. James’ Park at the weekend.

The former Leeds United and West Ham United goalkeeper believes that with Shelvey among the midfielders playing in the formation that Newcastle did, it was understandable why Eddie Howe’s side conceded three goals.

Green said on BBC Radio 5 Live (8:17pm, November 22, 2021): “There was a goalkeeping error in there, and there was an unfortunate own goal.

“So yes they did concede three, but with you playing in a formation in which you have got Joe Willock, who loves to bomb forward, and Shelvey, who’s a creative midfielder who has not got the legs which he once had, then you are going to be exposed.”

Jonjo Shelvey an important player for Newcastle

Shelvey, who earns £70,000 per week as salary (Spotrac), has not always had the best of times at Newcastle.

But new Newcastle manager Howe has publicly spoken of the former Liverpool midfielder’s quality.

Howe has said that the 29-year-old is a brilliant midfielder who is going to be massive for his team.

Now, against Brentford,, Shelvey did not play badly.

The Chronicle gave the Englishman 7 out of 10, saying that he “stayed focus on defensive responsibilities”.

The former Swansea City midfielder took one shot which was not on target, played five key passes, had a pass accuracy of 78%, took 69 touches, attempted one dribble, made three interceptions and two clearances, and put in five crosses.
