Chris Waddle stated on BBC Sport that it’s ‘not good news for Liverpool’ that Jordan Henderson was substituted during England’s UEFA Nations League clash against Belgium on Sunday.

With England losing the game 2-0 at half-time, Gareth Southgate opted to bring Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks on for the Liverpool captain and Waddle thinks it’s injury-related.

In recent weeks, all of Liverpool’s backline have either picked up serious injuries or worrying knocks over the international break, whilst Fabinho and Thiago have also suffered knocks in recent times.

And now with Henderson going off midway through England’s defeat to the number one team in the world, Klopp will be pulling his hair out.

“I just wonder whether Jordan Henderson is carrying a bit of an injury,” said Waddle. “That’s not good news for Liverpool.

“It’s a like-for-like change [Winks on for Henderson]. Can’t see that being tactical.”

With Joe Gomez joining Virgil van Dijk in the long-term injury room, some ex-players and fans were questioning whether Henderson could fill that void at the back.

Fabinho is still making his way back and given Henderson’s combative nature, vocal skills, calmness with and without the ball, he could do a job at the back.

Of course, Liverpool fans would prefer their captain to do his business in the middle of the park, but they will be hoping his substitution is nothing but tactical.
