Diogo Jota could and probably should have scored at least twice during Liverpool’s visit of Newcastle United this afternoon.
Somehow, Liverpool were only 1-0 ahead at the half-time break after a number of Jurgen Klopp’s players – but especially Jota – spurned gilt-edged chances during the opening 45 minutes.
There was one instance on 28 minutes when a defensive lapse saw the Reds almost capitalise, but the former Wolves attacker, who joined the Reds last summer, failed to score with only Martin Dubravka to beat.
Liverpool boss Klopp – who took off the Portuguese star on 58 minutes – looked on with his mouth open in disbelief over how his side failed to score.
And Peacock Sport pundit Jim Beglin said during commentary of the game: “Well I think Jurgen Klopp is shocked that hasn’t found the net. Newcastle made a complete hash of it with Ciaran Clark and Jota should do an awful lot better then. Not good.”
Was Jota wasteful today? Absolutely, but you can’t single him out.
That’s because Sadio Mane and Mo Salah – who opened the scoring early on – also passed up glorious chances, especially the latter who missed a first-half one-on-one with Dubravka.
Some of Klopp’s stars look absolutely shattered in terms of confidence and it wound up costing the hosts, who conceded in the dying seconds as Joe Willock snatched a shock equaliser.
