Steven Thompson has blamed James Tavernier for the screamer that Rangers conceded in their Champions League opener this evening.
The Ibrox outfit are being hammered on their return to Europe’s elite competition.
Rangers are trailing 3-0 at half time and a stunner from Mohammed Kudus was the pick of the three goals for the hosts.
Kudus held off a challenge from Tavernier en route to smashing home the Dutch outfit’s third of the evening.
And although it was a stunner, Thompson has said that the Gers’ captain could – and should – have done more.
He told BBC Sportsound: “It’s an exceptional finish, it really is. James Tavernier’s defending isn’t good enough – he doesn’t do enough to engage him, and Tavernier almost lets him go. Kudus just shrugs the Rangers captain off.”

Kudus goal v Rangers
This goal in particular sums up the gulf in class between the two sides throughout this 45 minutes.
Nobody in a blue shirt can get anywhere near an Ajax player and the home team certainly have the quality needed to make the most of even half chances.
This is the Gers’ first Champions League outing in 12 years and unfortunately there’s just such an enormous difference in quality.
If Ajax can do this to them then it’s frightening to wonder what Liverpool – who won 9-0 in a Premier League outing last month – could do.
There’s still 45 minutes left for Rangers and writing off Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side is never a good idea, but it could be a long night in Amsterdam.
