Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn has been sent home by the Netherlands, as they claim he is ‘not fit enough’.

Spurs beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 on Sunday afternoon, heading into the new international break with a victory thanks to Harry Kane’s winning goal.

Players are now off around the world with their national teams, but Bergwijn is heading back to Tottenham already.

The Netherlands’ official website notes that Bergwijn has left the training camp having been examined by the Netherlands’ medical staff on Monday.

They have ruled that Bergwijn is ‘not fit enough’ and he must now miss matches against Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Poland over the next eight days.

Bergwijn wasn’t even in the Tottenham squad to face West Brom on Sunday, so it’s no great surprise that Frank de Boer’s men have concerns.

On the one hand, fans may be concerned about the £25million winger, as he hasn’t quite hit the ground running this season and is now missing out on potential match time with his country.

On the other, at least Bergwijn won’t be put at risk with his country, and he now has time to try and get back to full fitness with Jose Mourinho and co whilst many are away on international duty.
