Speaking on The Hard Truth Podcast, Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has urged Liverpool to go out and sign Ivan Toney.

The Brentford striker has been on fire this season. Only Harry Kane and Erling Haaland have scored more goals than Toney this term, and if he carries on scoring at this rate, he’s on track for 30 goals.

Toney would undoubtedly be a great fit for many top clubs, and MacAnthony says that Liverpool should be all over the Englishman as they look to bolster their frontline.

Toney to Liverpool?

The Posh chairman urged the Reds to sign Toney.

“Ivan is on a different level. Is there a better number nine at Chelsea? Is there a better number nine at Manchester United?” MacAnthony asked.

“You can go and write a cheque for £100 million and buy a player from Holland, or France, or Italy, and give them a year to acclimatise, or you can write a cheque and buy one of the top three number nines in the Premier League, who’s not even in his prime.”

“What do you do? Right now, if Liverpool had owners who would write that cheque, I’d happily have him in Liverpool’s team like that.”

Has he got a sell-on?

It’s no wonder MacAnthony is asking these gigantic clubs to go out and sign Toney for £100m, his Peterborough team probably benefit from a decent sell-on clause if he makes a move from Brentford.

MacAnthony, of course, sold Toney for just £10m back in 2020.

All joking aside, it would be very interesting to see how Toney would get on at a club like Liverpool. He’s certainly got the striking instincts to score goals for any team, but leading the line for Jurgen Klopp’s side is another question entirely.

However, as MacAnthony says, Toney may not even be in his prime yet, so if Liverpool do go out and sign him, he could still be moulded into a Klopp player.

This may be one the Reds want to consider, but not for £100m.
