Tottenham goalkeeper comments on disappointing loss to Liverpool.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Ben Davies was picked apart by Sadio Mane at the weekend as Liverpool capitalised on a dismal performance from the Lilywhites.
Davies is often a reliable stand in for the excellent Danny Rose, but the difference in quality was evident at Anfield on Saturday as Liverpool earned a 2-0 win.
Yet goalkeeper Hugo Lloris did not feel that left-back was Tottenham’s undoing, instead pointing the finger at their midfield for being outbattled and outplayed.
Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris saves from Liverpool’s Sadio Mane
Speaking to Tottenham’s official website, Lloris says that the game was lost further up the pitch than Davies’ could be responsible for.
He said: “We had a lack of aggression and struggled to put intensity into our performance. It was the opposite for Liverpool, they played high-intensity in the first half and we lost a lot of balls in the middle of the pitch.
“We lost the battle in the middle of the pitch and that’s difficult against a top team like Liverpool.”
Tottenham’s Victor Wanyama clashes with Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson
Tottenham are usually so successful in midfield, and fielded a strong line-up featuring Mousa Dembele, Victor Wanyama and Dele Alli as their trio.
Strangely Wanyama did not win a single tackle all game, with Dembele only doing so once, and Alli two. You will be hard pressed to find an instance of the trio repeating such a low combined tally, while substitute Moussa Sissoko only managed once tackle when he came on.
