Liverpool have gotten off to a poor start this season, and immediately some have pointed towards their lack of recruitment of a new top-class midfielder this summer.
The Reds’ midfield has been truly shocking, and while Arthur Melo is a decent addition, they’re still lacking that truly elite new player in that role.
Danny Murphy spoke on this matter on talkSPORT, and while he’s noted the recent criticism of the Reds’ recruitment, he stated that he hadn’t heard many complaining at the time.
The ex-Liverpool man was then asked by Jim White if the likes of Jamie Carragher are being wise after the event by pointing the finger at the lack of signings, and Murphy agreed.
However, Carragher had never actually said such a thing, and he’s taken to Twitter to bite back at this claim.
Liverpool are struggling on the pitch, and now even the pundits who cover the club aren’t getting along.
To be fair to Murphy, he was put in a bit of a bind by Jim White who asked a very leading question about his former teammate’s punditry, but Carragher’s analysis here is correct.
Liverpool have a clear transfer strategy, they don’t just sign players for the sake of it and they will only spend big money if they think a player will be a big upgrade on what they already have – hence the interest in Tchouameni and Bellingham.
However, with those two moves off the table, Liverpool were willing to wait until next summer to make this elite midfield addition – which is widely expected to be Bellingham, and while their midfield issues are obvious this season, the long-term plan is what truly matters.
Carragher hasn’t blamed the recruitment team because there isn’t really much to blame them for. They couldn’t get their two top targets this summer, so rather than spending on a player they don’t necessarily want, they’re remaining patient until the right opportunity does arise.
