Sheffield Wednesday are being linked with a move for the former Arsenal defender.

Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with a surprise move for former Arsenal centre-back Johan Djourou.

Djourou’s name surfaced publicly at Sunday’s post-Rangers press conference, but Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal refused to comment on his alleged interest in the free agent, who The Sun has since claimed to be in talks with the Championship promotion chasers.

A 67-cap Switzerland international, Djourou is undoubtedly of good pedigree, having also made more than 100 Bundesliga appearances for Hamburg and Hannover, and a similar amount in the Premier League for Birmingham City and Arsenal – with whom he also gained Champions League experience.

But having missed much of last season through injury and with no pre-season match practice to speak of, his signing would not be entirely without risk even on a free transfer, with top level wages also likely to be expected by the player.

And some Wednesday supporters fear the 30-year-old’s transfer could turn out like that of Urby Emanuelson a year ago, who appeared for only 20 minutes in a meaningless final day defeat to Fulham.

Many others, though, would be more than happy to have Djourou at Hillsborough – here’s what they’ve been saying about the latest centre-back to be linked with the Owls:
