Tony Cascarino told talkSPORT that he’s ‘not surprised’ that Tottenham won’t be bringing Gareth Bale back to the club.
The Real Madrid forward was on loan at Tottenham last season and has since returned to Spain.
There were questions as to whether Bale would return to Spurs for a second time, but Nuno Espirito Santo has shut that down by making it clear he won’t be returning.
Former Republic of Ireland international, Cascarino, labelled Bale as a ‘fabulous’ player but thinks the right call is being made.
“No, it’s not a surprise,” said Cascarino. “His goal record was good. I don’t think that’s the way forward for Spurs to take on Gareth again.
“Look, he’s a fabulous player and I have said it many times that no-one has done as well as him abroad. Not even close.
“He has been the best player, certainly from the British Isles to go abroad and be successful.
“I just don’t think it’s a long term solution for Spurs. I think they have to have an element of a younger team and a bit of a dynamic side. And a side that needs to be built pretty quickly.”
Tottenham’s short-term plan last season was to win a trophy under the stewardship of Jose Mourinho.
But given that Daniel Levy sacked him days before the League Cup final, it just showed what the Spurs chairman thought of the trophy-laden coach.
If Bale helped deliver a trophy for Spurs then, for the short term, he would have done his job, but it’s a different kettle of fish for the long-term hopes.
Tottenham needs reconstruction from top to bottom, younger faces needed to be brought in and Nuno needs to be backed in order for the club to move forward.
All of which rules out Bale being part of that plan because it just doesn’t fit.
