John Hartson doesn’t think Arsenal can be ‘successful’ with Shkodran Mustafi and David Luiz, as he told Stadium Astro.
The former Gunners striker made it clear that it’s ‘not a personal attack’ on the Arsenal defenders, but for them to keep clean sheets ‘week in and week out’, they need to part ways with the first-team duo.
Both Luiz and Mustafi started Arsenal’s defeat to Spurs over the weekend, and whilst both weren’t at fault for the goals they conceded, they have been a problem all season for the club.
Hartson doesn’t expect Arsenal to bring in three new centre-backs when the summer transfer window opens, but he made it clear where the problems lie.
“They might not bring in three new ones [centre-backs],” Hartson told Stadium Astro.
“But, certainly for me, I don’t think Mustafi, it’s not a personal attack, I don’t know the guy, and David Luiz, are your answers to be successful. To keep clean sheets, week in and week out.”
Against Spurs, Mikel Arteta’s side put themselves in the driving seat by scoring early in a spectacular manner.
But minutes later, Sead Kolasinac’s wayward backward pass resulted in Heung-Min Son bursting through on goal and levelling the scores.
It was a defensive mistake which has become a common theme for Arsenal fans to be used to now.
Mustafi has been at fault for a number of mistakes during his time at the club and Luiz’s showing against Manchester City recently proved that his signing has only made matters worse.
