Xherdan Shaqiri is set to win a Premier League winners medal with Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp’s side were crowned champions of England last week for the first time in 30 years, sparking huge celebrations around the city.
The Switzerland international, who made six Premier League appearances for Liverpool this season, is entitled to a medal.
But does he deserve it? Not according to one of Shaqiri’s compatriots.
Veteran Swiss manager Arno Rossini has told Tio that the 28-year-old is ‘not a champion’, suggesting that he didn’t play a big role in the Reds’ success since joining the Anfield club back in 2018.
The former Bayern Munich attacker has also won major titles in Germany – including a Champions League in 2013 – but Rossini has claimed that nobody will remember Shaqiri’s involvement in any of the competitions for which he has won a medal.
He said: “Xherdan is not a champion. We certainly cannot say that he left his mark with the teams with which he won. Not with the big guys at least. He was the protagonist in Basel, certainly not at Bayern or Liverpool.
“Let’s say that over the years he has often followed the games of his teams as a spectator, sitting in the best places. And millions have been paid for him.
“Of course, Xherdan is filling the bulletin board and seeing his bank account grow dramatically; I don’t know how many, in 10 years, will remember him thinking about the great teams in which he has played.”
Shaqiri, who earns £90,000 per week on Merseyside, has been a good signing by Klopp for the most part.
Last season, he scored six Premier League goals – including a double against Manchester United – after joining for just £13 million, whereas his 2019-20 campaign has been heavily disrupted by injury, so it isn’t exactly his fault that he has only managed to play six times in the league under Klopp so far this season.
