Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Newcastle United may be about to do ‘something surprising’ as they search for a new manager, on the Que Golazo podcast

Fonseca not nailed on?

Paulo Fonseca has become the front runner to get the Newcastle job in recent times, with the Portuguese boss leading the way.

However, Newcastle have been on the verge of an agreement with Fonseca for some time without finalising a deal.

Romano, therefore, thinks that the Magpies may be having second thoughts about appointing him.

And he has suggested that there could be further twists as Newcastle look for Steve Bruce’s successor.

“Paulo Fonseca is prepared to accept this proposal from Newcastle, but it’s up to Newcastle,” Romano began.

“They now have everything set with Fonseca, but they need to decide if they want to go with him or do something different.

“Newcastle have not 100% decided yet, but Fonseca is the front runner. Everything is ready for him.

“They are deciding about money and final things, but I’m sure Fonseca is the front runner.

“Let’s see if they want to do something surprising, because days are going on and they are not signing this contract, so this is why they may be thinking of something else or something surprising.”

Intruiging update

Romano’s comments certainly appear to be interesting, as the days since Bruce’s departure continue to tick by.

Newcastle have now been linked with a whole host of names, as they search for a new manager to take charge.

Fonseca has been famed for an attacking style, which would surely go down with the St. James’ Park crowd, but he has no experience of English football.

That could be a risk, with Newcastle currently rooted in the relegation spots after a disappointing start to the campaign.

Newcastle are next in action against Chelsea on Saturday, but as the weekend draws nearer, it seems increasingly likely that temporary boss Graeme Jones will remain in charge for that contest.
