Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports PL (28/09/20 at 10:30 pm) that he’s ‘not 100% comfortable’ with the defensive line Liverpool are playing following Andy Robertson’s comments.

Liverpool’s left-back shared, after their win against Arsenal, ‘we caught them offside a few times’, but they are comments that don’t sit well with Carragher.

Alexandre Lacazette was put through on goal twice during the second-half and Carragher thinks that the opposition are going through on goal at least ‘once a game’ because Liverpool want to push their defensive line that bit further up the pitch and create that offside trap.

“It was interesting listening to Andy Robertson’s interview,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “He said ‘we caught them offside a few times’. That tells me that’s something Liverpool look to do.

“It’s something I am not 100% comfortable with, to be honest. It’s the only qualm I have when watching this Liverpool team.

“For me, I don’t know what the problem is for the [Liverpool defensive] line to be a couple of yards back. It’s a bit Russian Roulette really. It just feels like at times that the opposition go through on goal once a game and it’s not something I am comfortable with.”

Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

  1. Champions League

    2018/19

  2. UEFA Super Cup

    2019

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

    2019

  4. Premier League

    2019/20

Interestingly, last season, Liverpool started to push that extra five-yards up the pitch compared to previous campaigns.

Whilst it’s a risky tactic, it’s one that worked wonders last season because the results are there for all to see, but it needs to be remembered, that Liverpool have the players to push further up.

Liverpool’s backline doesn’t lack pace, so whilst Lacazette may have gone through on a number of occasions, for most parts, they will back themselves to keep the opposition out.

Both Jurgen Klopp and Mikel Arteta will lock horns once again on Thursday night, this time in the League Cup, and it will be interesting to see if the Arsenal boss will try to spring a tactical surprise of some sort.
