Norwich City sporting director Stuart Webber has said he is not surprised by Sunderland suffering two successive relegations.

The Black Cats find themselves in League One after two disastrous campaigns.

Webber spoke to MyFootieWriter and discussed the importance of structure, which he feels Norwich City have got right.

The Canaries sit top of the Championship, with a healthy mix of bargain transfers and academy talent, rather than big spending.

Webber said he found it clear why Sunderland suffered a downturn in results.

He said: “You probably watched the Sunderland documentary on Netflix. When you watch that, it’s no surprise that they suffered a double relegation, it really isn’t.

“They put all their faith in one man, the manager, and as soon as it went wrong, said, ‘it must be his fault’.

“Why not look a bit deeper? Maybe that group of players wasn’t good enough, maybe the culture wasn’t right, maybe the head coach needed some support. Instead, you put him on a pedestal and said, ‘go and sort this out will you?’”

Relegation was a transitional moment for Sunderland, with new ownership propelling more changes from the top down.

This season with new manager Jack Ross at the helm they are fighting for promotion from League One, making a start on righting the wrongs of the last two campaigns.
