The Canaries midfielder, who has come through the Championship club’s academy, has made 20 appearances so far this season.
Todd Cantwell has spoken out on his breakthrough at Norwich City, claiming that he probably would not be where he is now if not for his loan spell at Fortuna Sittard last season.
The 20-year-old midfielder has come through the ranks at the Carrow Road outfit and made one appearance last term, in the FA Cup match at Chelsea in January.
At the end of January, Cantwell went on loan to the Dutch club, then in the second division, and scored twice, as well as setting up another three in 10 games, to help seal promotion to the top flight.
The Norfolk native had gone from strength to strength this season, making his first start for Norwich in the team’s Carabao Cup first-round match against Stevenage on 14 August 2018.
He then made his league debut in September 2018 against Reading and, in December 2018, scored his first senior goal in a 3-1 victory over Rotherham United.
At present, Cantwell’s appearance tally stands at 20, with 17 played in the Championship, two in the Carabao Cup and one in the FA Cup, and in an interview with the Eastern Daily Press, he said last season’s Sittard spell was crucial in his development.
“I don’t think I would be where I am now if I didn’t have that loan last season,” he said. “The loan was a very successful one and it was good to play some grown-up professional football in a different country.
“We got promoted to the Eredivisie, that’s back where the club should be, and without that I probably wouldn’t be where I am now.”
