What a night it was for Steven Davis last night.

The Rangers midfielder made his record 120th cap as Northern Ireland got within 90 minutes of Euro 2021.

A penalty shoot-out win over Bosnia and Herzegovina following a 1-1 draw was the perfect occasion for Davis to reach the landmark.

Davis beat Pat Jennings’ previous caps record on a historic evening for Ian Baraclough’s men.

Baraclough heaped praise on Davis in the aftermath of the match, according to the BBC.

“It was a fitting night for him,” Baraclough said.

“There was a lot of pressure on his shoulders as well and he’s obviously delighted to have reached that milestone.

“I can’t be any more pleased for him for what he has given to Northern Irish football has been second to none.

“When things weren’t going so well he always turned up.”

Players who keep on turning up for international duty and plugging away get plenty of plaudits and they deserve every last one of them.

Northern Ireland have had a fantastic last few years and nobody has done more to help them improve than Davis.

Now, he is one game away from leading his country to what would be a second straight European Championship.

Slovakia lie in wait, but didn’t convince particularly in beating the Republic of Ireland last night. Davis and his team-mates should have nothing to fear.
