Northampton Town chairman David Cardoza has admitted discussions are being held over Ivan Toney’s move to Newcastle.
Northampton Town chairman David Cardoza has told the Northampton Chronicle and Echo that talks are ongoing with Newcastle over a deal for Ivan Toney.
Toney, 19, has come up through the ranks at Sixfields, scoring ten goals last season in a promising campaign for the Cobblers.
Now though, speculation surrounds Toney’s future at Northampton, as is often the case when teenage Football League players emerge in the first team with positive results.
The Mirror reported over the weekend that Newcastle United are on the verge of completing a £300,000 move to bring the forward to St. James’ Park.
Northampton chairman Cardoza has now admitted to the Northampton Chronicle and Echo that negotiations are ongoing with the Magpies over a deal, but nothing concrete has been decided just yet.
“I can’t say any more at the moment, other than there has been discussions with Newcastle,” said Cardoza. “I am expecting to hear something from them, but nothing yet. There have been a number of conversations, but we are still waiting to hear something definite.”
Striking options
Should Newcastle complete the deal for Toney, new manager McClaren would still need to bring in a first-team striker, with Toney considered to be one for the future.
Emmanuel Riviere failed to impress last summer, whilst Sky Sports believe that the club will look to sell Papiss Cisse this summer, suggesting a huge overhaul of the club’s striking options.
Toney could make an impact, but given his inexperience, the Magpies have to splash more cash than £300,000 to solve their striking problems – and fans will be eager to see Mike Ashley spend big for once.
