Quinton Fortune has admitted that he wanted Liverpool new boy Luis Diaz to join Manchester United, following his inspirational Champions League display this week.

Liverpool booked their place in the Champions League final by beating Villarreal in Spain on Tuesday evening.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were 2-0 down at half time to the Yellow Submarine who, in the space of 45 minutes, had levelled up the tie.

But the German manager introduced Diaz at the break for Diogo Jota and the Colombia international – a £49 million signing in January – changed everything, scoring one of the Anfield club’s three second-half goals.

And the former Manchester United player has conceded that he’s a tad jealous of Liverpool for having signed him, admitting that he’s wanted him at the Red Devils for a while.

He told The Athletic: “As much as we don’t want to say it, Liverpool: every time they sign a player, you are thinking, ‘Wow, they look like they have done their homework’. Take Luis Diaz. I had been watching him for the last few months and years, thinking, ‘Oh my goodness, this is the player United need to sign’.

“Then Liverpool sign him and you are just thinking, ‘Nooo! How are we missing these players? Come on! Help me out here!’.”

Midas touch

Liverpool absolutely do have the golden touch when it comes to signings.

Regardless who they sign, it always tends to work out.

Well, for the most part.

The Reds dropped almost £100 million on Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain across 2017 and 2018, and although the former is having a decent season this time around, most of his four-year spell on Merseyside has been dominated by injury.

But in general, if Liverpool spend big on a player – particularly a forward player – it’s usually a guarantee that they’ll impress and Fortune isn’t the only Manchester United fan who will admit to feelings of jealousy over their recruitment success.
