Glasgow Rangers are looking to appoint a director of football, but McCoist is not convinced about how effective an appointment would be.

Ally McCoist has suggested that it is nonsense to believe that appointing a director of football will be the answer to Rangers’ problems, The Scottish Sun reports.
The Gers appear to be planning something of a backroom reshuffle following Mark Warburton’s departure, and The Scottish Sun reports that they have targeted Southampton’s Ross Wilson to take on the director of football role at Ibrox -though the offer has since been declined.
However, Light Blues legend McCoist has seemingly suggested that they should focus the attention on getting the managerial appointment right, as he insisted that he is unconvinced about how influential a director of football would be.
“I am not against a director of football but it is absolute garbage if anyone thinks that a director of football is going to solve Rangers’ problems right now,” he said, as reported by The Scottish Sun.
“It is nonsense. I have never heard so much nonsense in all my life.
McCoist
“Did Jock Stein have a director of football? Alex Ferguson, Walter Smith, Martin O’Neill? No.”
As McCoist pointed out, many of the greatest managers to have worked in the game have not had someone in the position that Rangers have decided they want to create at the club.
However, it also makes sense to try something different given the current situation the Gers find themselves in.

Warburton was unable to put any pressure on Celtic during the club’s first season back in the Scottish Premiership, and some will point to the number of poor transfers they made during the summer as one of the main reasons for their struggles.
And while some fans may perhaps prefer to see the next manager given a chance to make his own mind on transfers, having someone who can concentrate on recruitment will surely boost their chances of closing the gap at the top.
