Newcastle United could soon have new owners, with Mike Ashley publicly confirming his intention to sell the club.

BBC Sport reported Ashley has put the club ‘up for sale’ and hopes to do a deal before the end of 2017.

Former Newcastle players Nolberto Solano reacted to the Chronicle’s report on the news, posting an image of trumpets, to imply celebrations are in order, along with a praying symbol.

Ashley has reportedly been in talks with buyers in recent weeks and he is clearly ramping up his efforts to move on.

Faustino Asprilla had an even more animated reaction.

Ashley has overseen two relegations – and two subsequent promotions – but has lacked the ability to invest enough money to take the club to the next level.

The club’s record transfer fee remains the £17 million they paid for Michael Owen back in 2005 before Ashley took over.

Despite the measured if unspectacular transfer business, Newcastle have had a strong start to the season, with current boss Rafa Benitez managing so far to get the club into the top 10.
