Noel Whelan has told BBC Radio Leeds that he would like to see Leeds make four or five signings this summer, including two or three players who are at the top of their game.

The Whites enjoyed an incredibly promising campaign under Garry Monk, spending much of the season inside the Championship’s top six and only narrowly missing out on a play-off spot.

With Leeds seemingly running out of steam in the final weeks of the campaign, the summer appears to be a pivotal time for the Yorkshire side as they look to construct a team capable of challenging in the promotion race once again next year.

And following the final day draw with Wigan at the DW Stadium, Whelan outlined just how many new faces he hopes to see at Elland Road this summer.

“Leeds need another creative midfielder – I’d say another four or five players should do it for them,” he told BBC Radio Leeds.

“I think Leeds need at least two or three players of real, established quality. You can take a gamble on a few players but not a squad full.”

With a number of players and Garry Monk impressing over the course of the campaign, many Leeds fans will firstly, be desperate to see as many of the current squad stick around as possible.

And if they can make the number of additions that Whelan hopes to see while keeping the core of the team that has threatened to become something special this year, then perhaps Leeds will be able to clear the hurdle that has proved just too big for them this time around.
