Noel Whelan suggested Liverpool striker Divock Origi on BBC Radio Leeds as a potential transfer target for Leeds United in the January transfer window.
Following the Whites’ defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion at Elland Road in the Premier League at the weekend, a Leeds fan called the post-match show on BBC Radio Leeds and suggested Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud as a potential target for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Former Leeds striker Whelan, who now works as a pundit for BBC Radio Leeds, responded by asking whether Liverpool’s Origi would be an option.
Giroud has been linked with a move away from Chelsea, with Gianluca Di Marzio claiming on his website that Juventus want him.
Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds: “Would Origi do it at Liverpool? Origi at Liverpool?”
This is not the first time that Whelan has suggested Origi as a potential target for Leeds in the January transfer window.
Whelan – who also said on BBC Radio Leeds that he does not think that Ryan Kent is going to join the Whites from Rangers this month – stated in December 2020 that the Belgium international striker would be “perfect” for the West Yorkshire club.
Divock Origi to Leeds United in January?
Origi is struggling for playing time at Liverpool at the moment – he has played just 13 minutes in the Premier League this season, according to WhoScored – and the Reds and the striker could be open to an exit in the January transfer window, at least on a loan deal.
The 25-year-old is a good striker who knows the Premier League well, and a loan spell at Leeds could allow him to get regular first-team football.
Patrick Bamford is really the only senior out-and-out striker at Leeds, and signing Origi on loan would give head coach Bielsa a valuable option upfront.
