Noel Whelan has told BBC Radio Leeds that Pierre-Michel Lasogga was “very poor” in Leeds United’s shock 2-1 defeat at Newport County in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Leeds bowed out of the competition at the first hurdle for the second successive season as the League Two outfit shocked Thomas Christiansen’s side at Rodney Parade.

Lasogga, on a season-long loan from Hamburg, played the 90 minutes but was unable to get among the goals and the German striker hasn’t found the net in his last six for United now.

The 26-year-old arrived with a big reputation and initially justified the hype after netting three in his first four Championship games for the Whites.

But Lasogga is now struggling in a major way since returning from injury early last month and former Leeds striker Whelan isn’t convinced by him just yet.

He told BBC Radio Leeds: “I thought Lasogga got a little bit better in the second half but still very poor, for someone on the money that he’s on and the hype that is talked about.

“I don’t see much hype there I’ll be honest.”

Lasogga and Jay-Roy Grot’s performances underlined the need for another striker this month but it remains to be seen whether Leeds fans get their wish.
