Leeds secured a late point against Millwall on Saturday.
Noel Whelan has slammed Leeds United’s Tyler Roberts on Sporting Life’s podcast for his wastefulness during Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Millwall.
Roberts, 19, started his first game for Leeds since joining the Whites in January for a £2.5million fee (Yorkshire Evening Post) against Millwall, in what was only his third appearance in total.
Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford were both sidelined for the match, the latter likely to be out of action until the new year after injuring his posterior cruciate ligament injury.
Wales international Roberts missed plenty of chances during Saturday’s clash and was eventually replaced in the 68th minute. Former Leeds striker and fan favourite Whelan believes Bamford and Roofe would have scored Roberts’ chances.
“We did see the downside on Saturday, in that we are light on strikers,” Whelan said. “Tyler Roberts stepped in, because our two main strikers, Patrick Bamford and Kemar Roofe, are out.
“He had some great chances on Saturday. I guarantee you that if Bamford or Roofe were in that position, they would’ve scored them.”
Leeds now face Preston North End on Tuesday night at Elland Road and Roberts is in contention to spearhead Leeds’ attack for a second time, with Roofe and Bamford expected to miss out again.
The Whites remain at the top of the Championship table after Jack Harrison scored in the 89th minute for Leeds to cancel out Jed Wallace’s opener, but if Roberts had converted one of his chances, Leeds could have picked up three points.
