Noel Whelan has praised Leeds United’s Pablo Hernandez for his goal on Boxing Day.

Leeds came from behind to beat Nigel Clough’s side 2-1 at The Pirelli Stadium and move five points adrift of the automatic promotion places in the Championship.

It was Hernandez’s goal which turned the tide for a United side who were losing 1-0 at the break due to Tom Naylor’s opener.

But the Spanish wizard bent a wonderful free kick past Stephen Bywater – who had just been booked for pulling down Eunan O’Kane’s shorts in a bizarre incident which caught everyone by surprise – to equalise shortly after the hour mark.

Minutes later, Kemar Roofe fired the Whites ahead with a well-taken finish, but Whelan has lavished praise on the “pure class” from Hernandez under the circumstances.

He told BBC Radio Leeds: “It’s his concentration as well because there was so much going on before he had to take the free kick, with the referee and the shorts being pulled down by Bywater who got a yellow card and it kept going on forever and ever, so it was pure class.”

It was United’s fourth Championship win on the bounce and Christiansen’s side are now unbeaten in six league games.

The West Yorkshire outfit, who visit Birmingham City next time out, are hitting form at the right time and the fans will hope these kind of performance persist for much of the season.
