Should Leeds United have signed Brentford’s Sergi Canos? Should the Whites be smart in the transfer market like Newcastle United?

Noel Whelan has suggested to BBC Sport that Leeds United should have signed Sergi Canos in the January transfer window.

Canos joined Brentford from Championship rivals Norwich City in the January transfer window.

The 20-year-old has scored one goal and created nine chances in 14 league matches for the Bees so far this season.

Former Leeds striker Whelan has suggested that the Whites should have signed Canos when he was still at Norwich City.

Whelan has also suggested that for Leeds to get promoted to the Premier League at the end of next season, they need to be smart like Newcastle United were.

Newcastle got relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season, but they have secured promotion to the English top flight straightaway.

“Newcastle had the parachute payments but they bought the players who they knew would get them promoted,” Whelan told BBC Sport. “And even with the money they’ve had – it’s not always been easy for them.

“But think about strikers: Sergi Canos, at Brentford. £2 million. What a steal. I’d take him over any Leeds winger, bar Roofe.”

Leeds have a good team and a number of good players, such as Chris Wood and Pontus Jansson, but it is important that they make signings in the summer transfer window. The West Yorkshire outfit have failed to end up in the Championship playoffs this season.
