Leeds United returned to winning ways in the Championship on Tuesday evening with a 2-1 victory over Bristol City at home.

The Whites headed into the match against City at Elland Road on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Cardiff City at home in the league.

Garry Monk’s side took the lead after 27 minutes when New Zealand international striker Chris Wood found the net.

Pablo Hernandez made it 2-0 to the West Yorkshire outfit in the opening minutes of the second half, and Milan Djuric halved the deficit for City in the sixth minute of injury time.

Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan was following the match, and he was impressed with the performance of goalkeeper Robert Green.

“Rob Green has had a tremendous game tonight,” Whelan told BBC Sport. “The goalscorers will have all the headlines but we can’t forget how important Green has been.”

“Hernandez is a Man of the Match contender but Rob Green would get it for me,” added Whelan. “Leeds lost a bit of discipline and structure in the final ten minutes – and Bristol got in behind the lines three times in that time. It could have been worse if it wasn’t for Rob Green.”

Green has made mistakes this season, but against City the Leeds goalkeeper was absolutely brilliant.

The 37-year-old former Queens Park Rangers custodian made as many as eight saves on Tuesday evening.

Leeds are fifth in the Championship table at the moment with 57 points from 32 matches and are strong contenders for the playoffs.
