Noel Whelan has told The Yorkshire Evening Post that Leeds United summer signing Kemar Roofe is struggling to adapt to the Championship.

Roofe joined Leeds from Oxford United on a four-year contract in the summer transfer window, as announced on the Championship club’s official website.

The 23-year-old is a highly-rated attacking player who can operate as a winger as well as a striker.

According to BBC Sport, West Yorkshire outfit Leeds had to pay Oxford a transfer fee of £3 million in order to secure the services of Roofe.

Former Leeds striker Whelan has stated that the attacker is still adapting to life in the Championship, having featured in League Two for Oxford (now in League One) last season.

“We’ve got Souleymane Doukara on the bench and Kemar Roofe but he’s not a striker going through the middle,” Whelan told The Yorkshire Evening Post.

“He’s got pace, yes, but we are talking about a young boy who is 23. He’s still getting to grips with the Championship and he’s finding it very difficult.

“He’s got to bring in the quality that everyone thought he had in pre-season against lesser clubs but now you are in big-boy territory and you are now playing against people that are bigger than you and stronger than you and just as quick as you.”

Roofe won the League Two Player of the Year award last season and arrived at Elland Road with a strong reputation, having scored 26 goals in 49 matches in all competitions during the 2015-16 campaign.

The attacker has yet to score a goal in the Championship for Leeds this season, but he has created three chances in five league appearances for the Whites.
