Noel Whelan has defended Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa.

Swansea City consigned Leeds to a first defeat of the season by winning 1-0 at Elland Road this afternoon, courtesy of Wayne Routledge’s last-minute winner.

The visitors were behind Bielsa’s side on goal difference at the summit prior to kickoff, but wasted chances saw the Whites fail to go into the international break as top dogs in the Championship.

A frustrated fan criticised Bielsa on BBC Radio Leeds afterwards, commenting that the Argentine’s ‘unwillingness to change the players during the game’ cost the team and will do so again this season.

Bielsa swapped Patrick Bamford for Eddie Nketiah on the hour mark, before throwing Helder Costa into the mix 12 minutes later.

Whelan, responding to that supporter, told BBC Radio Leeds: “Well, he did change it. He did make substitutions. He brought Nketiah and Helder Costa on, Douglas as well. You can’t say he didn’t force the issue trying to get the win because he did.”

Leeds now have a two-week break in which to regroup before going to Barnsley on September 15.

And it’ll be interesting to see if Bielsa does give Costa a full debut, having started with Jack Harrison and Pablo Hernandez in all six Championship games so far.

Marcelo Bielsa manager of Leeds United arrives prior to the Carabao Cup second round match between Leeds United and Stoke City at Elland Road on August 27, 2019 in Leeds, England.
