Leeds United have returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United this evening.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side headed into the Premier League game against Newcastle away from home at St. James’ Park on the back of a 1-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion at Elland Road in the league.

Leeds took the lead after 17 minutes through Raphinha, and Miguel Almiron restored parity for the home team on 57 minutes.

Jack Harrison scored a wonderful goal just four minutes later to put Leeds back in front, and it stayed 2-1 to the visiting team for the rest of the game.

Noel Whelan was following the match for BBC Radio Leeds, and the former Leeds striker has given his take on the final result.

Whelan said at full time on BBC Radio Leeds (7:56pm, January 26, 2021): “I didn’t know which way this game was going to go this evening. Two teams struggling for form and confidence, on the back of defeats.

“Tell you what. We played some fantastic stuff. We really did make it hard for ourselves with the chances we missed in the first half, but what a second half.”

Former Leeds defender Rio Ferdinand was following the match for BT Sport 1, and he was impressed by one particular player.

Ferdinand said on BT Sport 1 (7:56pm, January 26, 2021) while discussing Harrison’s goal: “A great ball from Raphinha, all the space in the world. No one around him marking him, that’s a paintbrush of a left foot there, just guides it into the far corner, fantastic strike from Harrison. I think he has been a breath of fresh air since he has come. He has been one of the star men for Leeds this season. Fantastic football.”

According to WhoScored, Raphinha took two shots, played two key passes, had a pass accuracy of 72%, won one header, took 41 touches, attempted two dribbles, made one tackle and one clearance, and put in two crosses.

Harrison took two shots, had a pass accuracy of 56.3%, won two headers, took 48 touches, made one interception, and put in one cross, according to WhoScored.

The result means that Leeds are now 12th in the Premier League table with 26 points from 19 matches.
