Noel Whelan needed just seven words on BBC Radio Leeds (broadcast on 26/2 from 21:45) to sum up Izzy Brown’s debut for Leeds United’s first-team, which came in Tuesday’s defeat to Queens Park Rangers.

With QPR losing seven in a row heading into the game, Leeds had a golden chance to go back to the top of the Championship. But in truth, the Whites rarely looked like they were about to bag the three points.

Luke Freeman scored the game’s only goal. Leeds managed to break into QPR’s final third on a number of occasions, but offered little quality at the vital moment and can have few complaints about the loss.

In an attempt to inject some inspiration into his side, Marcelo Bielsa gave Brown the chance to make his long-awaited senior debut for Leeds as he replaced Gjanni Alioski with just under 10 minutes of normal time remaining.

Unfortunately, it was not a debut to remember for Brown. He was booked for a reckless challenge before he had barely got a touch of the ball, and some QPR players felt that he was fortunate to stay on the pitch after another foul moments later.

And following the full-time whistle, Whelan seemed to hint that he would not have had too many complaints had Brown been sent off as he summed his debut in just a handful of words.

“Too much enthusiasm and not enough skill,” he told BBC Radio Leeds.

In fairness to Brown, it would have only been a bonus had he been able to turn the game around after coming on. Leeds were so far short of their best that it was always asking a lot for the summer signing to make the impact that Bielsa’s men desperately needed.
