Leeds United kicked off their Championship campaign with a 3-2 win away at Bolton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon, with Thomas Christiansen tasting victory for the first time.
The Whites enjoyed a decent pre-season, and got off to the perfect start in the Championship as Kalvin Phillips’ deflected strike from a well-worked corner gave Leeds an early advantage at the Macron Stadium.
One became two before the half hour mark as Chris Wood headed home Ezgjan Alioski’s flick-on from close range, though goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald was caught out on a corner kick, allowing Gary Madine to bring Bolton back into the game.
Leeds restored their two-goal advantage before half time though, as intricate passing set Wood in on goal, and he squared the ball for Phillips to bag his second of the game with the goal at his mercy.
Bolton did receive a glimmer of hope when Adam Le Fondre scored from the penalty spot, but Leeds managed to hang on and claim a win on the opening weekend of the season, which will be a huge boost for new boss Christiansen.
Going forward, Leeds looked dangerous, but Christiansen may be a little concerned with some slack defending at times, with new faces Wiedwald and Matthew Pennington still settling in with the Whites following their arrivals over the summer.
Noel Whelan
After the final whistle, pundit Noel Whelan took to Twitter to share his delight at a great start to the campaign, with the former Leeds striker happy with so many positives to take from the 3-2 win.
Whelan also offered praise to the travelling Leeds fans, who again backed their team with great support on the road, with the first home game of the Championship season coming against Preston next weekend.
