Leeds United may have clinched automatic promotion to the Premier League already, but that did not affect their mentality against Derby County this afternoon.

The West Yorkshire outfit are already assured of winning the Championship title this season and playing in the Premier League for the 2020-21 campaign.

Derby have nothing to play for as the Rams will not end up in the playoffs this season.

After a goalless first half at the Pride Park Stadium this afternoon, the Rams went ahead on 54 minutes through Chris Martin, but two minutes later Pablo Hernandez equalised for the visiting team.

Jamie Shackleton made it 2-1 to Leeds in the 75th minute, and an own goal from Matthew Clarke on 84 minutes saw Marcelo Bielsa’s side pick up all three points from the encounter courtesy of a 3-1 win.

Noel Whelan was following the match for BBC Radio Leeds, and he gave his thoughts on the final result.

Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds at full time on Sunday (4pm, July 19, 2020): “Derby couldn’t live with them. Their passing, their movement, their vision, everything about Leeds today just said class.”

Stats

Over the course of the 90 minutes at the Pride Park Stadium on Sunday afternoon, hosts Derby had 46% of the possession, took 10 shots of which two were on target, and earned four corners, according to BBC Sport.

Visitors Leeds had 54% of the possession, took 23 shots of which eight were on target, and earned five corners, according to BBC Sport.
