Noel Whelan has praised Leeds United central midfielder Kalvin Phillips on BBC Radio Leeds.
The former Leeds striker was impressed with the performance of Phillips during the 4-0 win against West Bromwich Albion at Elland Road in the Championship last Friday evening.
Whelan has said that he loves the player that the 23-year-old has become this season, and has outlined what he brings to Marcelo Bielsa’s team.
Whelan said about Phillips on BBC Radio Leeds: “I love the player that he is now. I enjoyed him last season even though he was kind of 50-50 divided by fans, but I just think the role that he plays is so important, I really do.
“What he does selfishly for the team, the tackles that he makes, the interceptions that he makes, the way he starts play off from the back as well, he is always available, always brave on the ball, and he just allows the flair and creative players to go and do and what they need to do.”
Quality footballer
Phillips is one of the best players in the current Leeds team, and the 23-year-old has established himself as a key figure for the Whites.
According to WhoScored, the Englishman has made 32 appearances in the Championship for Leeds so far this season, scoring one goal and providing three assists in the process.
Against West Brom at Elland Road last Friday evening, Phillips took one shot, had a pass accuracy of 77.8%, won one header, and made six tackles, three interceptions and four clearances, according to WhoScored.
Leeds are second in the Championship table at the moment with 67 points from 35 matches, just two points behind leaders Norwich City.
