Kalvin Phillips played well for Leeds United against Sheffield United in the Championship on Saturday.
The former Leeds striker was impressed with the performance produced by Phillips during the Whites’ 1-0 win against Sheffield United away from home at Bramall Lane in the Yorkshire derby on Saturday afternoon.
The 22-year-old is a central midfielder by trade, but the youngster has been playing as a makeshift central defender of late.
The youngster was deployed in defence by Leeds head coach Marcelo Bielsa against the Blades on Saturday afternoon, and he played admirably well in the Championship match.
According to WhoScored, the 22-year-old had a pass accuracy of 63.6%, won five headers, made one interception and seven clearances, and played one key pass.
The win against the Blades means that Leeds are now second in the Championship table with 39 points from 20 matches, just a point behind leaders Norwich City.
Whelan was impressed with the performance of Phillips, and the former Leeds striker has hailed the progress being made by the youngster.
Whelan said about Phillips on BBC Radio Leeds on Saturday afternoon (2:28pm, December 1, 2018): “What a performance, Kalvin Phillips. Just gets better, matures every single game.
“He has been brilliant. He can play anywhere, honestly. He is just a 100%-er, but with that he has got quality as well. He is developing into a fantastic young player.”
