Noel Whelan has praised Leeds United defender Leif Davis on BBC Radio Leeds.

The former Leeds striker was impressed with the performance of Davis during the Whites’ EFL Cup tie against Stoke City at Elland Road on Tuesday evening.

The 19-year-old, who can operate as a left-back or as a centre-back, played well for the Whites in defence, made a late block at the far post, and looked comfortable on the ball.

Davis contributed in attack as well, as he troubled the Stoke defence at set-pieces and also put in a great cross for Helder Costa.

Whelan believes that the teenager could be an option for Leeds in Championship games as the season progresses.

Whelan said about Davis on BBC Radio Leeds: “He has got a great delivery, he looked quite assured playing centre-half as well, which I liked.

“He looked really comfortable there, he looks a lot stronger, he looks like he has grown into his body a little bit as well, and you need to have that when you are playing centre-half.

“You are going to come up against some robust centre-forwards and bigger men. I was really impressed by how much he has come on.

“He could really be that centre-half that we have been saying that we need as extra, and he might be that.”

Promising talent

Ben White and Liam Cooper are the established centre-back pairing at Leeds at the moment, while Gaetano Berardi and Kalvin Phillips have also been deployed at the heart of the Whites’ defence.

Davis is only 19 years of age, and it is too early for him to thrown in at the deep end, but if he gets some decent playing time in the coming weeks and months, then he could develop into an important player for Leeds.
