Matt Grimes joined Leeds United on a season-long loan deal from Swansea City in the summer of 2016.

Now that Leeds United’s season has come to an end, perhaps it is time to see the back of Matt Grimes. The 21-year-old midfielder’s loan deal from Swansea City is now over, and surely he is not coming back to Elland Road.
Grimes joined Leeds on a season-long loan deal from Premier League club Swansea in the summer of 2016. Manager Garry Monk knew the 21-year-old midfielder from his time at the Liberty Stadium, and the youngster was expected to be a success at Elland Road.

The England Under-21 international, though, has been a huge disappointment at Leeds. Grimes has been able to make only one start in the Championship this season. In six league appearances, the youngster has not scored a single goal or provided an assist.
It is fair to say that Grimes has been a failure at the West Yorkshire outfit. Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan has posed a number of questions about the Swansea-owned youngster, and all the points he has made are valid.
“Matt Grimes – it just didn’t happen for him here,” Whelan told BBC Sport. “Monk knows Grimes from his days at Swansea, but what does he offer that Bridcutt and Vieira don’t?
“He’s not a number ten – so what is his role? What is he bringing? I’m sure he is a nice bloke, but the point remains.”
Monk should be praised for what he has done as manager at Leeds, but one thing that has not worked out for him is the signing of Grimes.
