The defender replaced the suspended Pontus Jansson for the game.
Former Leeds United striker and BBC Leeds pundit Noel Whelan has been commenting on the performance of Liam Cooper against Rotherham United yesterday evening.
Leeds beat Yorkshire rivals Rotherham 2-1 in what proved to be a tight affair against the 10-man Millers.
Leeds United’s Liam Cooper
Goals from Chris Wood and Souleymane Doukara proved to be enough in the end, despite Richard Wood scoring a late goal for Rotherham and plenty of late pressure.
Throughout it all Cooper played well. The Scottish centre-back was stepping in for fan favourite Pontus Jansson, who was suspended for the game.
Whelan felt Cooper performed well but that Jansson will come straight back in and replace him when Leeds take on Liverpool in the EFL Cup this week. He told BBC Radio Leeds:
“Solid. Very solid. Very professional.
“You could see the grit between his teeth and he didn’t want to let the team down. It’s very difficult when you have not played full games at Championship level.
“I would have thought so (Cooper will drop to the bench). He (Jansson) needs a game as well it can be difficult to get up to match temp. Even if it is just 45 (minutes).”
Leeds manager Garry Monk talks to Pontus Jansson
Whilst Cooper may not be about to become a starting centre-back at Leeds again the fact they have such an option waiting in the wings is a huge boost for Leeds boss Garry Monk.
He knows that should either Jansson or Kyle Bartley be unavailable that Cooper can come in and do a job at this level.
Hopefully he can play a big role at Elland Road this season.
