Former Leeds United star Noel Whelan was clearly impressed with how Kemar Roofe performed in Saturday’s win over Rotherham United, judging by the comments he made to the BBC during the match.

Roofe played 71 minutes of the Whites’ win against their Yorkshire rivals at the New York Stadium and impressed with his performance, which he capped by setting up Souleymane Doukara for the second goal.

Whelan, commentating for BBC West Yorkshire Sport, took the opportunity during half-time to highlight the importance of the role played by the former Oxford United man.

He said, as quoted on the BBC’s live blog: “Roofe has changed his game, slowed it down, made it about more than the pace.

“He’s picking up the pockets of space, getting between the lines, and players are looking up and seeing him there.”Leeds' Kemar Roofe and Blackburn's Jason Lowe in action

Then, after Roofe was substituted with 19 minutes remaining to a superb ovation from the travelling Leeds fans, Whelan added: “Roofe deserves every bit of applause he gets tonight.”

Looking back at his performance after the game, Whelan finished: “Roofe was busy, controlled, got himself into good areas and was always looking for the ball. He was one of the better players out there today.”

Roofe has been a key part of Garry Monk’s side since his summer arrival, making 21 appearances in all competitions, although around half of his Championship appearances have been from the substitutes’ bench.

He has proven that he can adapt to the higher standard of football on show in the Championship, and he deserves the credit he has received for his play from manager and pundits alike.
