Manchester United’s on loan Leeds defender made his return to the side last night.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson’s Leeds United loan spell has not gone well so far, but last night was a small step in the right direction.

The left-back was selected to start against Premier League opposition Leicester City, his first appearance since the previous round against Burnley when he was substituted off after a poor display.

Borthwick-Jackson lasted only 45 minutes at the King Power, but this was not due to a poor display, but instead because of injury, with the 20-year-old picking up an ankle knock.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, pundit and former Leeds striker Noel Whelan said that he was encouraged by the full-back’s performance.

He said: “We saw a little bit more of him. He showed more quality, more desire, and wanted to be out there.

“I was disappointed he went off, I wanted him to get 90 minutes.”

With Leeds first choice left-back Gaetano Berardi serving a suspension, Borthwick-Jackson’s injury is poorly timed.

However Whelan does not feel Borthwick-Jackson would have been in line to feature this Friday against Sheffield United in any case.

He added: “It didn’t make a difference as far as Friday is concerned, Anita will play.”

It is disappointing for the loanee that he has slipped down to third choice in the pecking order, but the versatile Vurnon Anita is a more accomplished player.

If he can make a swift recovery he could be rewarded with a place on the bench this Friday.
