Over the past month Leeds United fans have been growing more and more frustrated with winger Ezgjan Alioski.

The winger has struggled to contribute effectively to the Leeds attack, struggling to stay onside and make the right decision in the attacking third.

Last night’s game against Hull City was a case in point, in which he was caught offside twice. His only shot missed the target.

Yet former striker Noel Whelan is backing Alioski to keep his place, due to the defensive work he does.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds’ post-game broadcast, Whelan gave his perspective on the Macedonian.

He said: “He does work hard for the team.

“He does his defensive work very well.

“When he gets forward, his decisions, crossing, needs to be better quality.”

Leeds aren’t blessed with a high number of wingers in the squad, although some would like to see Stuart Dallas come in for a run of games.

Opponents have struggled to break Leeds down and over the past two games they have only conceded once, a long ranger wondergoal from Adam Reach.

If manager Marcelo Bielsa regards Alioski’s defensive work as highly as Whelan indicates, the Argentine may be reluctant to switch the winger out this weekend against a dangerous Brentford side, even despite his attacking faults.
