It has been a challenging first season at Leeds United for Jay-Roy Grot.

Noel Whelan has suggested on BBC Radio Leeds that Jay-Roy Grot isn’t good enough for Leeds United and shouldn’t be given a role to play next season.

The 20-year-old striker has scored one goal in 20 Championship games – 19 of those were off the bench – since a £1.5 million switch [Daily Express] from NEC Nijmegen last summer.

The towering Dutchman was given a 20-minute cameo in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Norwich City but did not make the sort of impact that Leeds fans would have been hoping for.

Plenty of United fans might be open to seeing him get sold this summer but although Whelan does not believe that’s a viable option, the former Whites hitman does not expect to see much of him in the first team next season.

He said on BBC Radio Leeds: “He will be here next season because he’s contracted. But he won’t be part of the plans and he shouldn’t be part of the plans.”

Fans of the Elland Road side will probably agree with Whelan’s sentiment.

That being said, it’s worth remembering that Grot – who only turned 20 last month – is still very young and certainly has time on his side to be successful in England.

Then again, it has been a very disappointing first season and recovering the confidence that he must have lost is a big task in itself.
